Time Table

SWOT

Strengths -

Skills -

Skills I feel confident are, Graphic design and responding to feedback in a positive way.

Resources -

The resources that I have available to me, to help develop a product  are: A digital art pad, this will make making the product easier for me; Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, this will help me actually make the product; finally, the internet, this will help with research so I can get ideas for my product.

Knowledge -

The things I am already passionate about is digital drawing. I find it very therapeutic and I know how to use it, as I am very confident that I can make the product look nice and presentable. So I will be doing a product based on digital art.

Weaknesses -

Skills -

The things I am not good at involve: time management, planning, 3D modelling, focus and research.

Traits -

Personal traits that have created barriers in the past involve focus, time management and will power. Focus is a real struggle because I get distracted easily, which results in less work being done. Time management is almost the same, but its a different problem, because when I am doing work, I focus to much on easy things instead of the problematic things so I waste my time resulting in even less work being done. Finally will power, this is the worst problem. This is because I struggle to find motivation to actually start or finish the work. So my work comes out as half complete or very lacking.

Knowledge -

Some gaps in my knowledge lie in my art, when doing art in Sketchbook Pro, I do not know what most of the tools are or what they do so I am always using the basic tools, which means I am never improving.

Opportunities -

Skills -

The new skills I can learn to eliminate my weaknesses are how to 3D model, how to effectively find the research I need and how to references it, how to plan effectively so I can get better time management and finally learn to focus on stuff by learning ways to combat being distracted easily.

Market -

I will have a unique idea, as I did my research and there are not many games with furries in. So designing furry characters for a furry game would give me a unique selling point.

Resources -

The things I have access to are a community that likes this sort of thing, Autodesk Premier Pro and good sources for research

Threats -

Environment -

I can't control electrical problems, such as internet cutting out, the files become corrupted for an unknown reason and epidemics such as COVID.

Assistance -

In person contact, due to COVID. If we need to talk online if the internet cuts out for an unforeseen problem.

Time -

All work must be completed by 27th May 2022. I will achieve this by working to the best of my ability, getting research done, making sure its referenced, planning ahead and getting feedback.

Due to Time Constraints, I believe that I cannot create the 5 characters I intended to do. So instead I am aiming to do 3 characters each with their own different sets of designs.

Mind Map

Furrstopia mind map.png

This is my mindmap, I have it shows what I am going to do for my project, since making this mindmap the name has change to The dystnopian islands and it says the characters I will draw and what animal they are. However, I could improve on the fact that I could say what type of character they are for example, Tank, Assassin, Mage and Healer.

Mind map part 2.png

This is the second mindmap I did, as the old one was to small and not very informative, with this one I have the main ideas of charcter design and locations, but I have also used dotted lines to show a connection but not a direct link.

Moodboard

Furry moodboard.jpg

This is my moodboard. I have shown my thought process and how I want peasant clothes and the animals I want. I have also included the

colour scheme that I will use for my evil characters and I have included some furry characters for inspiration for me to draw my own furries.

Concept Art

Lucky.jpg

This is Lucky, the main hero of my game "The Dystopian Islands." I used a template to get the shape and then just changed the design so that it would look different but have the same shape. I think that it really turned out well and it shows clearly the different styles the character could have.

I followed the stereotype and made the hero a Golden Retriever, as domestic dogs are considered to be nice. So by making the hero a domestic dog, players are more likely to like the character and enjoy the game.

Also, this is a much higher quality that my other drawings. This is because I increased the ratio of the page from a few pixels, to 3508 pixels X 4968 pixels. This means there were way more pixels so it was a better quality.

(Talia, 2022)

This is the second video showing how to draw fur in sketch book pro. It uses a soft airbrush tool, uses transparency lock, and uses a soft smudge brush to blend colours.

In the before shot is what the soft airbrush before knowing what to. This is not what I was told to do in the tutorial I was watching (as shown above) on how to draw fur. On the after, is the the same brush after I did some experimentation in the tools setting to get the required size, opacity and flow I was going for.

Island Map.png

This is the basic sketch of a map I am doing for my character design, doing this will help me created biomes and will help me imagine which biomes the characters would live in so I can design the clothes and appearance accordingly. Firstly I designed the main island, but then I thought; I called it The dystopian Islands, however there aren't any islands, so I added some in. I think it looks much better with the added Islands.

To create the map feeling. I used a paint bucket tool and coloured the background a light beige colour I then darkened the beige and draw a line on the outside of the map, then used a soft smudge brush to blend the colours together. I made it beige because I did some research on Skyrim maps, and seeing as the game is set in a medieval era and that's the same era I'm going for, they had beige coloured maps to make it look old.

I have also made the map look torn like the treasure map. I feel like it has really improved the overall look of the map and has improved. However I could still improve the map by really darkening the corners and then blending the colours together.

Lucky Desert.png

This is the Desert design for my hero character. I used the inspiration I got from my research by using the scarf and the old desert clothes. I used faded colours, to show that the colours fade due to always being in the son and all the sand that gets in the fibers. This really gives it that desert feel.

Lucky forest.jpg

This is Lucky's forest clothes. I got inspiration from the fantasy forest clothes and used it to create this design. The tail was one colour, but to add variation, I darkened the colour and fully coloured the end, then using a smudge tool, I smudged the colours together to blend them. The quality however is low, as its a small image being enlarged and there are white specs due to the paint bucket tool. When doing the finished thing, it will be one image on a higher resolution and I would take time to colour the specs in.

Forest designs.png

These are some different variations of the forest design for my character, I took inspiration from the fantasy forest clothes and drew that onto my character. I then made the variations, and think it came out very nicely. However, the black one looks more like royalty due to the number of buttons perhaps a royal guard. And the cream one looks like Afghanistan military. At least that is the vibe I am getting. So when I make the quiz to see which the audience likes, if the forest gets chosen I will be using the green version.

Lucky armour.jpg

This is Lucky when he has his armour equipped. I took inspiration from a set of medieval armour to do the body, arms and legs. But I also took inspiration from a plastic medieval helmet that I owned. This is what Lucky would look like when the player has reached the end of the game to defeat the boss, as he is now a hero.

Chronos Turnaround.png

This is Chronos, I designed him to be the main boss at the end of the game. I did three designs: a normal version, one with a scar and blind eye and the final one is him with jewellery. My personal favourite is the one with the scar. Due to stereotypes the scar makes Chronos look more evil as villains seem to have a scar of some sort on their face, be it a burn or a scar from being cut.

Chronos Armour.jpg

This is Chrono's thorned armour, the inspiration behind this was the boss needs to be imposing and scary and show death. So by making armour with spikes on them, he looks very imposing.

Chronos Suit.jpg

This was Chronos' suit design. The idea behind this was that he had to look classy but also villainous at the same time. So I used colour theory to use the sinister colours.

Chronos King.jpg

This is Chronos' evil king clothes. The inspiration behind this was that Chronos stole the throne from Lucky and his evil train of thought darkened and dulled the bright vibrant colours of the old kings clothes.

Xavier.png

This is Xavier, he is Chronos' right hand man and is second in command. This makes him one of the stronger mini bosses in the game. I like the different variations of fur colour and the black splodge over the eye. I also really like how I added the colour palette, it really makes the colours stand out more.

Xavier Hood.jpg

This is Xavier's cloak design. The inspiration behind this was that he wanted to be seen but not fully. So you can see what type of animal he is but you cant really see his face. So already you get this sinister vibe as he is surrounded in mystery.

Xavier Poor.jpg

This is Xavier's ragged clothes. The inspiration behind this was that Xavier was in disguise as a poor person, so that he could catch Lucky off guard.

Xavier Black Knight.jpg

This is Xaviers black knight design. The inspiration behind this is the fact that the black knights identity is unknown and the black knight through history was always shown as the bad guy, so because I have made Xavier the black knight it shows he is a strong bad character that works for a more powerful being yet his identity is unknown, not even his species. This would give Lucky an unfair advantage as he wouldn't know who he has to fight.

The Dystopian Islands.png

This is my logo, I used the same font as the one on the map and just coloured it gold to give it that rich, old timey feel. I then added the two main characters facing away from each other and I thought that was good enough, but when I looked at it, I felt something else could be added to it to make it look better. On closer inspection I saw that the two heads looked like an emblem, an emblem at which I could put on a shield. So, I drew a shield and used to complementing colours such as black and gold and made a shield, and then put on the emblem.

Peer Help

With my bibliography, I was worrying about how I had presented it and questioned if there should be gaps in between the different references to show  they are different. So to battle this question and to put my mind at ease, I asked Corey Jepson to take a look to see what he thought, and he said, "yeah that's fine, as long as they can clearly identify that they are different then you're fine."

I was also struggling with coming up with ideas for designs for the full body of my main boss and that I had only one idea for a design. Corey overheard me and game me some ideas on what to research and what colours to use. Such as: red and black colours, and to look at a game called For Honour as all the clothes there are boss like. So that is what I shall go on to do
